I think your “bad leaves” were probably the seed leaves.  The seed produces these seed leaves when it first germinates, and they help the plant to get going til the true leaves (in cosmos case, the feathery ones) arrive.  Their job is then done, and they often wither and die at that stage.  So I don’t think you have a problem - your plants look good and healthy.

I would, however, pinch out that flower bud - you want your plant to be directing its energy into producing roots and leaves at the stage, so that it can support lots of blooms later on. I would also pinch out the growing tips on each plant to encourage the plants to branch out below and become bushy.

They look like great plants ....you’re going to have a flowery summer 😀😀😀

Have you pinched them out at all, they don't look like they have any side shoots?

chicky Oh thank goodness! I was going to keep the flower bud as I thought this was about time I'd get a flower but I'll do that now. Secetures?

It was some of the feathery leaves that went 'bad' so I don't know if that's something different?

I thought the seed leaves were some kind of 'beginner' leaves or something as they looked very different.

Helen, you can snip the bud off with secateurs ,cut down to the joint, not just the actual bud itself.
Pinching out will make the plants bushier, and in theory gives you more flowers.
I think this explains it, but don't be afraid to ask more questions if you're not sure  :)
