I've got a pretty cheap one, stainless steel. No problem keeping it sharp. Trowel, bulb planter, bottle opener are all gathering dust now because this does it all.

@KeenOnGreen the one that @TimmyMagic has is the deluxe stainless steel version...
Yes, I believe it's stainless steel. I was under the impression that carbon steel is more prone to rusting, so I was happy to get stainless steel. If in fact this is wrong and it's inferior to carbon steel, oh well. I'm not massively bothered as I'm going to use it for weeding, not cutting things.

I used it again this afternoon. Love it.

    This is mine @KeenOnGreen

comes with a canvas holster which is very sturdy.  The leather holster is more than the knife  :o
This is the one I have too.

Carbon steel can rust. I use a TUF-CLOTH for a wipe down after use.

Love my hori hori - treated myself after using one at the garden I volunteer at - it is their go to tool.  Absolutely wouldn’t be without it now.  Mine’s the Niwaki (minus the leather holster - I’ve got a canvas one)

Plus, it always makes me feel like a warrior when I venture out to do battle with the brambles 👹

I carry my hori-hori down the community plot and always feel I might get arrested. Neighbours back off when they see me coming. :D

Thanks all, I think I might go for the Niwaki one.  @fire you're brave, I'd be too scared to carry mine to the plot, even hidden in a bag.  "But I'm only going to do some weeding officer, honest....."

I am glad mine is stainless steel then, as I'm not going to be wiping down garden tools after each use. I'm far too untidy for that!  :D

I emailed Japeto this morning to ask why the regular version is carbon but the deluxe version is stainless steel. Here is their response:

"Just to clarify, the carbon-steel blades are easier to sharpen but more delicate and easier to brake or damage. On the other hand, the stainless-steel blades are more durable and so they fit the purpose of our Hori Hori Deluxe Knife way better."

This is the one I purchased:

As a child in the Boy Scouts we wore sheath knives on our belts quite openly. How times have changed.

I also remember on the four saints days it was the custom to go to primary school in your brownies or cubs uniform. Did anyone else follow that tradition?
