I got a hori hori last autumn, and had the same reservations about overkill / fashion accessory. The first few times I used it I thought I had probably been right, it was useful but no great revelation. Then I found I was using it more, and more, and more, and the number of times this year I've thought 'Thank goodness for my hori hori' are countless. I absolutely love it. It is vicious looking though, and I feel very self conscious using it in the front garden!

My standard equipment is secateurs + hori hori knife. It digs, it cuts, it scrapes, it loosens soil, and you can exert a lot of power with it, there is no risk of it bending with normal and beyond-normal usage.
LOL @BenCotto - now that IS expensive. Imagine that ending up in the compost bin for 6 months...🤣 (even worse - the council garden waste bin so never seen again).
I've been toying with the idea of asking for one of these (the everyday one!) for my birthday. This year might be the year.
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
It is very cheap for that style of knife. Stainless steel doesn't usually keep an edge or sharpen well. For digging up weeds it will be fine, but if you want a cutting edge that is easier to re-sharpen, look for carbon steel.
I'm really tempted to get one. The basic model says it is carbon steel on the Japeto website, but the deluxe version (with the leather pouch), says it is made of stainless steel.
Does anyone have their deluxe version? I'd only get one if it is carbon steel.

comes with a canvas holster which is very sturdy. The leather holster is more than the knife
