Pear tree

  • @Dovefromabove yeah it’s exactly like that... the amount of blossom I’m expecting a hell of a lot of fruit, or would I be wrong in thinking that?

Not necessarily indicative of lots of fruit I'm afraid. Pollinators and weather need to cooperate and then you lose a lot of mini pears in early summer.
  • @Tack fair enough, even something edible will be more than I have had before!!

The loss of lots mini pears is the event called the 'June Drop' ... this is when the tree looks at the number of fruit that have been set, decides it's too many for it to grow to maturity and sheds loads of them.  Then after that you have a look and see if there are still too many and may decide to edit the numbers a bit more, especially if there's a lot of 'doubles' or too many on one branch which might not be able to take the weight.

Our Concorde pear is still young and it's espaliered, so after the June Drop I usually have to remove a few more ... it's painful, but the resulting harvest is worth it.

I too am new to pears having put this Concord pear in last year.

As you can see two bunches of flowers on the lowest limbs. Now I have to learn how to look after it!

This is my twin variety apple ( on one root stock) Golden Delicious and Elstar.

Please excuse the messy look, I mixed up the growing pruning and the fruiting pruning ( as it is 5 yo and just reached full height) so will need a good haircut in August, and has the most blossom yet, with the pink tinged flowers.

There is quite a bit to learn about fruit trees, but I'm getting there. 😁
  • I had no intention of growing fruit trees, they came with the house so it’s a bonus as the kids love fruit... I was more for growing soft fruits in the beds

Purpleallim, that's not a mess its lovelly, the summerhouse is perfect there, Jamie, keep in with us, we want to see how you go with the fruit. When we sold us our house, we brought some things with us, (they were shown as mnot being in the sale, pots) the new owner raised everything to the ground, we could have taken more!
  • @Nanny Beach ooh you’ll be hearing loads from me, I’ve always got questions! We’re in the process of SLOWLY converting the summer house in to a bar, it’s got full electrics so a tv and my DJ equipment has already made it in, will look really nice when it’s done

@Nanny Beach I have just seen your last message... I used to DJ as a job when living abroad but now I do it for fun, I started DJing garage music, then progressed to everything, I try to cater for everyone! I have my weight bench in my smaller shed, I got round to half tidying it up today but still got a bit to do before I can start using it, it’s getting there though... if I could sleep in the bar I would. I’d appreciate the quiet away from the kids!!
