Potentially dead tree fern return to store?

Hello, I purchased a tree fern stump just before Easter. I am getting slightly concerned as I cannot feel any fronds growing in the crown. It was all cut back when I bought it. It is an independent nursery not a major chain. Should they refund me? It’s a lot of money for a dead plant! They were not a very friendly bunch when we bought it.

I hope you haven't planted it outside without protecting the crown of the plant as these cold nights will kill it.

I'd admit they should not have sold it to you without care instructions but also its a lesson in not doing your research on a plant before you purchase it.
I think you will have a struggle to get a refund so I hope it's still alive.

Not helpful I'll grant you.. but that being the case I would have walked away.
Have a look deep into the crown, you may see signs of life. It's still a bit early for it start vigorous growth (depends where you live). If you haven't wrapped in fleece or straw I would now - may be too late sadly but worth a shot. Did the nursery tell you how to care for it? Is it in a sheltered spot - they don't like being exposed. Give it drink too..

yes it is protected. I have been growing tree ferns for a few years now so know how to look after them. Have only ever bought them ‘in leaf’ though. I live in the far south of the country.

Then we are advising you on things you already know as you didn't say you knew how to look after them.
As Chris said maybe you should have walked away as you aren't a novice.

One of life's small pleasures is walking away from rude independent retailers without buying anything.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work with the chains as they don't give a rat's anyway.
I hope it survives for you. :)
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Keep it warm & wet and it probably has a good chance.

Ha ha, yes, first time I have bought anything from there. Won’t be going back! Shame as it has lots of unusual plants.

Do they have a facebook page? No company likes bad info about their poor service being made public.
    Devon.
  • Of course being mean about them will change anything at all...reminds we why I don't have a FB account.
