Staking Dalias in Pots

Any suggestions as to the best way to steak dahlias in pots. I have some dwarf varieties that are not gonna need it but I have a few varieties that reach 3 to 4 feet.

    I suppose the best way to avoid stabbing the tuber when putting the cane or whatever in, is to insert it before planting the tuber.  I never think to do it so I resort to inserting the supports as close to the edge of the pot as possible.

    To avoid the possibility of stabbing the tuber, you could get some of those round grid ‘grow through’ plant supports, which could fit over the pots or you could bend the legs in a little to insert around the edges of the pot. That way you have some support in the middle if you need it.

    Certainly the grow through supports as Nollie suggests, not so cheap but last for years.
    Another option is 3 or 4  bamboo canes around the edge of the pot and tie string between them.

    I'll be doing similar to this. Not at the edge of the pot as that would allow for too much flop but about 3 bamboo canes fairly close to the tuber.

    What I would say after my experience last year is definitely do it. I was caught out with some high winds and it's more of a pain to rescue the plants after some heavy wind.

    Thanks everybody for your suggestions. This is my first time growing dahlias and I’m so excited but nervous!

    The conical supports look just like tomato cages. I may give that a try! Thanks for the suggestion

    I grow tall varieties of dahlias in large pots and stake them using wooden dahlia stakes. If they grow well bamboo canes are not usually strong enough for the weight of a large  dahlia plant. I use square pots and put 2 stakes per pot, in two of the corners. The stems of dahlias grow quite thick but are hollow so plastic trellis type supports might cut through the stems.

    Tall dahlias in pots, however well-staked, are likely to tip over in a strong gust of wind. For this reason, I put them near the fence and tie a bit of string to attach one of the stakes to the fence.
