Little dribbles of water only encourage the roots up to the surface where they will get scorched by heat from the sun in the summer ... you want them to grow deep into the cool soil deeper down ... by giving them plenty of water and letting it soak in, the roots will head downwards.
Are they planted near a wall or fence? They could be in a 'rain shadow' which prevents much rain getting to them even when it rains ... if so they'll be depending on you to water them ... I would give them a bucket full of water each once a week ... more often in warm dry spells.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
