golden crest conifers

My conifers seem to have brown tips on the leaves.. possible aphids.. Would "Rose clear ultra 2 " or "Provanto smart bug killer" insecticide work?

  • Are they in containers or very free draining soil?

Can we have a photo?  Best to avoid using pesticides until you're sure you know what you are dealing with, as the bird the tree is named after (ie, the Goldcrest), feeds on insects found on conifers, especially aphids found on the tips of the branches.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Hi there, The conifers are in well drained soil, 2ft high at the mo .
  • From that photo it looks reasonably healthy. They actually need a surprising amount of water. It may appreciate a drink?
  • Ah thanks, Do i go around the trees snipping the brown tips off? The forecast for the next few days says it's about 11 deg c during the day and 1 deg c at night... Is it safe to water or is it too cold?

Yes it's safe to water. Imagine if it rained...
  • Thanks Delski... I will dust down the old watering can and water . :)

Give them a good soak ... a bucket full each, poured slowly around the root area so that it soaks in rather than runs off the surface.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Thankyou "dove from above" As a newbie to all this any info is gratefully appreciated.
