Might be worth starting a new thread @smileysmile1966AMmtNsyZ, your new question might get missed otherwise If you want to plant a small tree, l would plant in directly into the ground every time.
OK my Internet green fingers buddies. All cleaned up and no clay in area. I've taken upto date photos. The sun shines nicely all morning in square area. I hate that gas meter it looks ugly. The gas pipe too. How a about a Bush shrub as shown in my neighbours front (attached photo). He tells me it's only 2ft deep. A big Bush to block the view of the meter and pipe? Or large planter box in front packed with bushy evergreens? Looking at decorative gravel today. Flamingo pearl I'm bringing home a 20kg bag.
I wouldn't plant a shrub on top of a pipe. All of our service pipes run along one bed towards the front door. I only plant perennials in that bed. There's a large hardy fuchsia in that bed too . I wouldn't dare trying to dig it out. Something shallow rooted like a sage bush might work though.
