Cardoons and Gunara frost and snow

hi all,

i just wanted some advice ..

have x2 pot bound cardoons that have died back completely die to snow ,they had a few leaves until the snow settled and now there is just stumps left in the pots, are they dead or will they shoot again?
Also my Gunnara has suffered despite being protected by old leaves and compost and is mostly brown with no real signs of shoots like i usually get at this time of year, any suggestions, the cold snap in early March really knocked allot of things out unfortunately!

Hi and welcome. These cold snaps are a pain. I don't know about the cardoons but the gunnera should be ok. If you are in a really cold area you could chuck a cover over at night until it eases up.

    hoping they both bounce back....

had a beautiful echium (pride of Madeira) that was about to bloom this year killed stone dead and also bug loss, problem is most of my plants are pot bound !
  • My Gunnera looked almost dead but  now new shoots are appearing.  I presume it takes a while to form new buds when the old ones are damage. Mine suffered unprotected frosts for a week at -10c and seems OK.

  • Just went down to the Bog Garden to check on mine............ splendid and flowering!!

Our poor guneras always suffer from the late cold spells and the frosts!
    However they do come back.
Are the guneras in a pot? If so they wont like that.

hey, yes it was planted in a half wooden barrel, it has thrived in it apart from when we had the beast from the east 3yrs ago ,then it almost died and i cut allot of it out and replaced half of it with a new plant, by about this time of year you can see new shoots coming out to start forming leaves but nothing this year ,a few green roots but no new shoots !

They need very moist conditions so maybe your barrel hasn't been enough for them.
Don't give up but give the barrel a good water or can you place in underneath a water trough so that the water can be accessed by the roots.

Isn't that butterbur rather than gunera?
  • The cardoon should be ok, next time when it snows knock off the snow so it doesn’t sit on it. Might stop the freeze.
