    Would be really grateful for advice on what to plant in my 2 raised beds. Our garden is North facing, the beds are 1 m square . I don't want veg or fruit, rather some ferns, dramatic perennials, etc. Am a bit stuck. Thanks in advance any suggestions really appreciated.

    What kind of soil do you have?  Sandy/clay/loam/chalky/stony/acid?  Whereabouts are you?  This affects weather/rainfall/extremes of hot and cold. 

    The answers will make a lot of difference to what will grow well

    Are the beds filled with bagged compost and top soil or your garden soil?
    Are you moving the washing line as from the photo it looks to be overhanging your beds?
    What are you intending to do with the area around the beds?
    Are the beds open to the soil underneath or on rubble and concrete?
    Just for my own curiosity why did you build raised beds as the area looks like you could have made a border without them?

    Sorry yes , I'm in Lancashire with great soil. Not sure whether it's acidic or not. Medium silty loam.  It's rains a lot in Lancashire, but the garden is well sheltered. I'm a novice gardener. But absolutely love being outdoors. Many thanks.

    Hi the beds are filled with top soil and I'm going to add extra compost. Not sure about the line yet. I have limited mobility and lots of metal supporting spine so raised beds allow me more freedom and independence .The area around the beds will be gravelled.

    For something dramatic or, at any rate, dramatically odd consider muehlenbeckia astonii or the wiggy wig bush. Adam Frost planted one in his garden on last week’s episode of Gardeners’ World.
