Watering seedlings

GW and other sites jump from sowing seeds to pricking out leaving us newbies to wonder how best to water seemingly delicate seedlings. Overhead or sat in a shallow tray of water? I know the compost shouldn't dry out but I don't want to overwater either. All guidance welcome.

Don't sit them in a tray of water. Spray them with mist or get one of those tiny houseplant watering cans. I've got one with a rose. It's great. It doesn't even knock the smallest seedlings over - much.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

I don't grow much from seed but in the early stages, depending on type of plant, I spray the soil to keep the top inch damp. Then as it develops, I water from the base.
  • Appreciate the advice B3

Where did you buy your watering can and what is the make/my model? Thanks.

You can probably get one from poundland but a$$zon sells them for a fiver.

I got it in the local garden centre. I'll take a pic for you tomorrow😊

I hear you about the jumps in seedling care!
I have been using a pump sprayer bought at my local garden centre, strongly recommend as opposed to a normal sprayer where you have to squeeze-squeeze-squeeze constantly (but I have a lot of seed trays)

Same as B3, it's a Haws, half Lt, cost around a fiver.Too many seeds and seedlings to spray.Got 12 trays in the conservatory alone, and even now and north facing,it gets really hot.Too difficult to remove, sections to water from the bottom.

Only use tap water on seeds and seedlings
