Sowing cosmos

Looking to sow some to start off inside today but haven't done it before.

Can they be sown in a seed tray then pricked out into individual pots or are they best to sow into small pots/cells to start with?

I start mine in seed boxes then transplant into 6-pack modules then either plant or move them into pots

I don't think it really matters too much. I start mine off in seed trays.

They're not fussy. A good one to start with. Make sure they have plenty of light when they sprout but don't bake them.

Glad to hear. Will see what trays/small pots I have spare.

Will need to watch on the light levels, re-did the conservatory somewhat last year and removed the manky old blinds- potential for serious baking sunshine if I'm not careful.
  • Mine already have flower heads formed  :# think I sowed a bit too early!

Had one tray with 20 cells and enough spare 3.5cm pots in the end so that'll save me pricking anything out. Just hope I don't inadvertently fry them.

If they were mine I would pick those buds off now, and bring on a bigger plant.

That's what I did last year.  Unfortunately in my case, once I hardened them off in May and planted them out they got absolutely massive (I pinched out to get them bushy) but only a tiny fraction bloomed.  And the few that did not until late September!  They were in a very sunny spot and I didn't feed with high nitrogen.  But perhaps it was the soil (though same situation in different parts of the garden).  In the end, it was a lot of work without much reward.  One could have mistaken them for invasive weeds ;P
