I AM going to nag, those pots are not deep enough, you can use the cardboard inners from loo rolls. No reason why not to sow some more now for later flowering. Did you know when you pinch out, keep the "pinchings" put them in water they will root. The ones I have now, I sowed on the 19th October, and they are amazing, have never had such fabulous plants from an Autumn sowing, I only did it, because they were free in my (other) garden mag, otherwise I would have waited till spring
I will take your advice, thank you. I have more seeds and loo rolls and I didn’t know about the pinchings and I expect there are lots more who don’t. Nag away we all need advice who ever we are. stay safe
That's amazing about the pinchings! I'm in Ontario, Canada and will be starting my English sweet peas in loo rolls v soon. I have growlights but I may try starting in a cold frame. We have had fantasic weather (sunny, over 10 Celcius..up to 18) and it looks like we may dip below freezing only few nights...if that happens I will cover with blankets at night. Wish me luck.you fortunate ones in more temperate climes!
Hi annalizakosma..I was just talking about the garden to my grandaughter who lives in Orillia. This loo roll idea is great I have seen bits about them before but thought they might get a bit soggy...I know better now.
They do get soggy but that's the point because when you plant them out in the ground they degrade.
If find it helps to stack the paper tubes in a tray or bigger pot that can hold them up and then fill with the sowing compost and dampen. Check the compost levels haven't sunk and fill if necessary.
Then I sow one seed per tube, pushing it in with my index finger to the first knuckle. Push the compost back over the seed then keep in a frost free (but not warm) place until they germinate. Over here that can be a cold frame, a porch or a sheltered spot against a wall depending on latitude and garden exposure. In Canada you may need a bit of warmth.
Once they show thru, move them into the light. Once they get to between 10 and 15cms, pinch out the tips to encourage them to bush - more flowers that way. You may find this link helpful - https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/popular/lathyrus/sweet-peas

Just beware @ladyjane23 Here in France I have come across some varieties where the tube is not cardboard but some sort of paper that just dissolves and is useless for sweet peas.
You can also sow beans and sweet corn in loo roll tubes as they don't like root disturbance either. It means you can sow them indoors and get a head start.

Quick question - substantial plugs have arrived from Sarah Raven. They look like they've been in root trainers. Have kept them moist and placing them outdoors in the day, back in the greenhouse at night. Advice online seems to say about planting out when last frosts have passed so around April / May. That feels like a while away considering how substantial they look - any advice?
