Bought way too many seed potatoes, help?

Hello
This year I have bought far too many seed potatoes from Denholm.  I am chatting quite a few but still too many, so my question is.... is there any way at all to save the ones I don’t plant for next year?  I’m very new to this.
Thank you in advance

No, either plant them in bags etc if you don't have any more ground space or give them away as they can't be kept dormant.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • I did the same thing. We wanted several varieties and bought far too many of each. We've planted some and given the others away.

Hopefully next year Potato Days will return and you'll be able to go and buy one or two tubers of as many different varieties as you like

Call up your local primary school and ask if they want them to grow with the students.  As they can be planted in a trug or bag, it might be a fun activity for a single year as a competition to see which class can grow the most by the time term lets out.  Or, if you have a ton spare, a class could send a few home with each student along with directions for planting.  Some will get grown, and you may start a love of gardening with some kids who have not experienced it before.

  • Find out if there is a community garden group of some kind near you to donate them to.

@Kirsty Peters  As @Joyce Goldenlily says - perhaps a Community Group would love them.  Ask your local council maybe.  The local libraries around here (bibliothèque) are having a "grainotheque" so that gardeners can take their left over seedlings and pick up new ones.  So there may be something similar in your area.  I often put seedlings out by my letterbox (which is at the front gate) with a sign "Help Yourself".
    Good luck.

Give to a community garden , school for their childrens raised beds or a new gardener at the allotment or a neighbour to grow at home..

If you remember for next year that a potato will need about 2 x 2 foot of space each so you can then "plan " how many to buy.

I have made the same mistake this year.

  • Thank you all for the great suggestions.  I’ll give them away somehow and try the local primary schools first.
i also know that I have got way too many tomato seedlings, has anyone tried selling them on Facebook?  I’d probably donate proceeds to MNDA.

Personally I haven’t, although I have sold/given other items but people do and they all seem to get pounced on so have a go, nothing lost.
i only sow seed by the amount of plants I need, usually 4 each of a few varieties.
