  • Dovefromabove there were quite a few straight shoots around the base.  I removed them about 3 weeks ago so the trunk is now free.  Thanks for your input.

As you have catkins on the tree ( male flowers) you will hopefully have hazelnuts next Autumn. 😁 It's a very odd way to produce nuts,   catkins over winter, female flowers in Spring ( months later) and then nuts in Autumn. I do love to see the twisted limbs over winter 😁
  • Will be wonderful to see the different stages unfold.  :)

It's second only to Maples for me in my list of favourite trees @Kirstenphelpsuk
Mind you mine is more a bush than tree, it's only 3 years old 😄

Twisted hazels can be very slow to grow bigger, partly because of the twisting and contorting, but they will push out some straight stems every year and you need to remove these to their base every autumn or winter so the tree doesn't revert to type because these straight stems are vigorous and will sap all the energy given half a chance.

They do make good plant supports tho.

I had mine next to the bird feeding station in my last garden and it was very much used by the small birds to perch in safety when the feeders were busy with queues.
