Plant ID: Twisted Willow or Twisted Hazelnut

We've just moved home and found this lovely old tree in the garden.  I'm just getting into gardening and not sure whether this is a twisted willow or twisted hazelnut? Hope the pictures help.  Also any recommended plant identification apps that are good at identifying plants and trees for a novice? Many thanks

    Looks like the twisted hazelnut I had in my last garden and not like the twisted willow I've brought here as a cutting.

    We haven't come across a reliable app - certainly none as good as the folk on here so just post a pic when you have anew plant to ID.

    PlantNet is pretty good for identifying. Sometimes wildly wrong of course but often get the right answer in the top two or three. Then it's a matter of narrowing down by reading details.

    The hazel is slower growing and very twisty.  Its leaves will be twisted too.

    The willow is more flexible and has paler, stems which are twisted but less tortuous than the hazel and does well in moist, boggy or wet soil.

    If you notice any straight ‘non-corkscrewed’ shoots or branches take a photo and let us see
    them. They must be removed or they’ll  take over the shrub. 

    That corkscrew Hazel would cost a fortune to buy that size. Enjoy it. 😊
