I've been reading out of interest. All 4 houses since birth had mains sewage, and mains gas, so I'm not acquainted with septic tanks. The nearest I get is a grandmother (the only grand-parent I knew) who had an outside toilet, but still connected to sewers. And I guess no gas - certainly not for cooking, but I wonder if the house ever had gas-lights - there were gas-lights in the street, but electric in the house I think.
I think Septic tanks are more common in rural areas where you don't get much in the way of amenities. Mains sewage, gas or street lights etc. You're on your own here.
By septic tank standards, I'd almost call that attractive. It's mossy and well bedded in. I'd plant some arching shrubs around it, species roses perhaps.
