I grew a Malvern Hills in a pot for nearly 10 years, then I dug it out, tough job so many roots, and gave it to my daughter to plant in the ground. It It was fine in the pot for 6 or 7 years then got a bit of die back. It needed a lot of feeding and watering. I planted it in 2010, gave it to my daughter in Feb 2020, having cut it down to 1 metre and it did very well in the ground in her garden last year.
This is it in 2013 then in 2019.
I have another one, quite old on an arch which is enormous, at my partner's house. So you can grow it in a pot with care for some years, but it won't reach its full potential.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Thank you for all this fantastic advice and the amazing photographs you have shared. I planted my Malvern Hills rose today. I ended up buying a potted rose and planted into the ground. How oftern should I water? I am in England so just seeing glimmers of Spring.
