I grew a Malvern Hills in a pot for nearly 10 years, then I dug it out, tough job so many roots, and gave it to my daughter to plant in the ground. It  It was fine in the pot for 6 or 7 years then got a bit of die back. It needed a lot of feeding and watering.
I planted it in 2010, gave it to my daughter in Feb 2020, having cut it down to 1 metre and it did very well in the ground in her garden last year.

This is it in 2013 then in 2019.

I have another one, quite old on an arch which is enormous, at my partner's house. So you can grow it in a pot with care for some years, but it won't reach its full potential.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Thank you for all this fantastic advice and the amazing photographs you have shared. I planted my Malvern Hills rose today. I ended up buying a potted rose and planted into the ground. How oftern should I water? I am in England so just seeing glimmers of Spring.
