Bare root rambling rose

If I buy a bare root rambling rose, will it give much growth and flowers this year? I want it to climb an arbour.

    I would expect it to put most of it's energy into developing a root system. It won't cover the arbour this year.

    Depends on the type. If it's a once flowering rambler then it probably won't flower this year. But a repeat flowering rambler will.

    Growth will depend on the variety, but obviously it's a long term thing if you're wanting to cover a structure. Will take a few years to be at its best.

    Thanks, I had Malvern hill by DA in mind. It is repeat flowering. I know it won’t cover the entire arbour but would be nice to have some growth and flowers. First time planting a bare root so no idea what to expect!

    First year my bare root roses didn't do much showy stuff. Busy getting their roots in. But the second year had loads of growth.

    Malvern Hills is a good choice, but very vigorous so will need keeping under control in future years. It will make growth this year and it will produce flowers, but it will take longer to cover the arbour. It will enjoy being planted with some well rotted manure and/or compost and some blood fish and bone fertiliser mixed in with the soil at the bottom of the planting hole, also a mulch of manure at the top, then a good watering.
    Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

    @urchenabhudia Malvern Hills wants to go straight in the ground ideally.

    You could pot it if there's a practical reason why it can't yet go in the ground but long term it'll need to.

    Mine threw out 12ft+ canes in the first year and flowered a lot. Second year flowered for most of the year with a spectacular first flush.

    You've made a great choice. It's one of my absolute favourite plants.

    Wouldn't be happy in a pot, though. And Mr Vine looks after his roses well.
