Good fence paint recommendation please.

I only have two panels on the patio to paint and was considering going from dark oak to black. Can anybody recommend a good brand that will paint over the existing colour, as I have read a few reviews about Ronseal not being great at going over previously painted wood but good on 'new wood'. I am hoping that black will show off the potted plants a bit better? t i a

  • I've used Cuprinol Shades, which seemed to adhere well, and is still in good condition after 8 years. However, I was using it on new wood. If yours are dark oak, is that not just a stain rather than a paint?

I've been pleased with Cuprinol Ducksback.

    Another shout out for Ducksback!

@Cambridgerose12, @K67 thank you for your suggestions.  The product I have been using is called Ronseal fence life. They do not refer to it as paint or stain, instead, they say it 'colours and protects'. It has always been good but as I was considering changing colour I was wondering if anyone had put black over another colour with success. Are Cuprinol shades and ducksback ok for rough sawn wood?
  • 'Shades' works really well that way and lasts. I don't know how it would go over Ronseal. But! I just saw they do testers: https://www.diy.com/departments/painting-decorating/paint-wood-treatments/paint-samples/DIY1624108.cat?Brand=Cuprinol

So you could, as they say on tins 'try it out in a small area'...

Ducksback is for fences which usually are rough wood although I have used it on smoother wood.
Shades is meant for furniture so smoother wood.

I sprayed my fence yesterday using Ronseal trade fence stain. I used one of the pressurised pump garden sprayers. The fence was untreated when I started and it's still quite patchy, worse on one side than the other, which may be down to the fence panels. I was trying to be careful when spraying, not laying it on too thick as I didn't want it dripping through to the neighbors side.
I’ve no idea what I’m doing.

I would go with Barn Paint. Lasts for ever, no need to top up for years.

@Latimer, I agree that does look a bit patchy but hopefully after a few coats it will improve. @Fire, interesting you mentioning barn paint. I had never heard of it until recently when I saw a couple of workmen painting in my local garden centre. I was admiring their work, got chatting and they said they were using barn paint and how good it was, long lasting etc, so well done Fire. I must admit I thought it was only available to trade and in huge tubs but apparently that is not the case.

I have been really impressed with Garden Shades. It covered my previously bright blue fence in one coat (I did go over bits again where it was tricky to get the brush). Bear in mind that it will cover old finishes fine, but if you do need a second coat, this needs to be done as soon as the first is touch dry. If you leave it a couple of days, the second coat will not stick, because it is water based and develops a protective shield when it cures.
