@februarysgirl I'm not sure I have the knowledge to be dealing with cutting back shrubs and stuff. Not yet anyway!! My needs are a similar width to yours, 50-60cm.
I’ve no idea what I’m doing.
  • @Latimer I've never had shrubs before and have absolutely no experience in pruning them 😆 As I'm going for a woodland look, I'm not too fussed about them looking too neat and tidy. It's going to be a case of if a branch is getting in the way, it's going to get cut back!

For shrubs, ‘rocket’ columnar type berberis are small and slim and would grow in that space (I have both red and orange ones). Euonymous Europeanus grows wild in my woodland here and self-seeds into the smallest of spaces, airy and slender in growth habit, funky looking berries for winter interest, doesn’t seem to grow much taller than around 3m. Nandina Domestica, to around 1.7m, is elegant, undemanding and grows happily in a narrow bed here.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.

@februarysgirl haha, that's sounds like my sort of attitude!! 😀😀

@Nollie I have a nandina elsewhere that's still pretty small and could easily be moved, that could be good. And I like the look of the Euonymus europaeus.

I'm also now wondering if a pyracantha might work? I've got an inherited one in the front yard, it doesn't seem to take up much space.
I’ve no idea what I’m doing.
