    Been doing a little searching.

How about Pittosporum 'Arundel Green' or Cornus sanguinea? Will they be ok in relatively narrow beds?

And perhaps a rose? Maybe one climbing variety and one shrubier one?

  • I've bought Mahonia "Soft Caress", Dogwood "Kessellringii", Rose "Primula", Sorbia "Sem", Nandina, Honeysuckle "Mandarin", Psuedopanax "Moa's Toes", Psuedopanax "Cyril Watson" and Euonymus "Green Rocket". I have no idea whether they'll work together or not, I've bought them solely on light requirements, size and whether they'll grow in neutral soil. There's bound to be some missteps in there but I'll still be keeping my fingers crossed it won't be too bad🤞

@februarysgirl I love the look of that dogwood!

Looks great! What about tall annuals that you could switch out every year.. verbascums, foxglove etc and underplant with spring and/or autumn flowering bulbs. Or maybe, depending on sun, something like agapanthus, Japanese anemone, Crocosmia or astrantia...

I know is a pretty dirty word on this forum haha, I do have bamboo in large large pots, black, red, and golden stemmed varieties, as  shield for an ugly view.. They do need a lot of watering, and regularl re-potting. You did say you wanted height originally, you wont get "height" from hostas or ferns, and most died down in winter

Fatsia japonica might work well if it’s sheltered and on the shady side.

@Flinster I definitely thought about tall perennials but I'm thinking of 1.5-2m to really get up and overhead.

@Nanny Beach well aware of hostas and ferns being low level but was just mentioning them as part of the woodlands feel. I don't mind keeping up with watering of the bamboo!!

Can anyone identify the shrub in this photo? It's from this month's edition of RHS's The Garden magazine. That's exactly the sort of look a was after.

@Flinster that's a good shout! I actually have one I bought last year but haven't planted yet, however it seems to have taken a beating during the cold weather and is looking very limp 😔

If it's partial shade would a philadelphus work or be too big?

@Flinster Hmmm, I had a look at the Aureus variety and as lovely as it is, I think it needs to be taller and more slender. That's not to say a different variety wouldn't to that. I'll keep looking at them.
