..re Chris as a shrub... yes this should be do-able for you, by all means... remember that all these climbing roses are really large arching shrubs, it's the way they're marketed and used by us as climbers, as they are seen to best advantage that way... so all you would be doing is reining in that large arching form, and maintaining it as a shrub rose, which means shortening the growths to suit... it's not a huge rose, so I would imagine 5 foot or so would be manageable... but obviously it's not going to be a rose you can just plant and leave it do its own thing..
