I'd go for 60cm but it depends on the clematis.  Some are quite small and will cope better in containers and some are not at all good in pots.  Which do you have?

Not really.  It's one of the most vigorous and, in my experience, hungry clems.

Well this is from the RHS Information page for it:

“Suggested planting locations and garden typesWall-side Borders Patio & Container Plants”

Any way that’s where it’s going, see how it grow. Thanks for your info.

Mine started off happily in a pot for its first two years - usual practice for me with clems - and then I planted it out to grow over an arch between our terrace and the rest of the garden.  I pruned it back hard every spring and fed it with pelleted chicken manure and a mulch of garden compost and it very quickly produced many new stems each year.

I would just be concerned after just a few years that it would be pot bound and starved and restricted at the roots.

I’ll keep that in mind. I can like you move it on if necessary. I’ll be more than happy to get to that stage, all my other attempts have died very early on!

Feeding and watering are usually the key.  They're very hungry and thirsty and slugs and snails think their new spring shoots are caviar.

Too big for a pot, unless you chop it in two every few years.  :)
They cover a large area, so you'd struggle to have adequate support for it in a pot.
