What to do now?

Hello all,
I’m not sure what my next step should be. I have germinated sweet peas in a heated propagation indoors. The plants have grown sufficiently to reach the plastic lids. Should I transplant them into deep root pots, and if so do I need to keep them in the house, somewhat problematic. My alternatives are a cold frame, or unseated greenhouse.
Advice gratefully received. Many thanks
Glyn.

  • Pot them individually into small pots or deep root trainers if you have them
and move them to your unheated greenhouse. Sweet peas are hardy.

    Ok will do. Many thanks.
  • Maybe keep them on a cool windowsill indoors without heat just for a couple of days so going out into the greenhouse isn’t too much of a shock after a heated propagator.

    will do
  • Hi@ Dovefromabove, I’ve put my sweet pea seeds in a pot in the cold greenhouse. Should I get them to germinate before I leave them or can they stay till they germinate in there. Many thanks Valerie
  • I would leave them in there ... they'll be fine ... they'll germinate a bit slower than if they were somewhere warmer, but they'll be sturdier plants for that.

  • Many thanks @Dovefromabove I’ve never grown sweet peas early before,  but I read that you got better flowers if you give them more time. Cheers Valerie

With you there Valerie, tried twice before, both failures. Also trying for the third time to grow clematis. This time in a container. Fingers crossed.

Clematis in a container is fine as long as it's deep enough for their long, thick, fleshy roots to spread and you keep it well fed and watered as they are hungry, thirsty plants.

I always plant my new clematis into pots for their first year or two so they can develop strong root systems before they go out and compete in the borders.   Makes for stronger plants with more shoots in my experience.

As for sweet peas, I need to start mine early as they don't like the hot weather that starts increasingly early here.  I sowed a packet in early December in a large pot on the terrace by our back door but only 3 have germinated.  Might have been an old packet tho.  Anyway, I sowed some more a few days ago and, assuming they germinate, will let them grow to a few inches high then pinch them out to make for bushier more floriferous plants.

Container is terracotta 45cm wide and same for its depth. Was advised this was suitable.
