Gardening Projects 2021

  • Big project is a patio and the paths up the garden and to the front gate. But looking forward to a proper year in the greenhouse any five new veg beds. Might even get some brassicas with new netting.

I think I'm done with big projects, the garden is now as I want it. Although having said that, I might try to downsize a bit, I've got at least 19 flower beds and getting older by the minute!

Nothing in my garden is really a 'big project' owing to the size! I need to replace a couple of fence panels, put up some more vine eyes and wire, and construct some kind of storage bench. Thinking of an extra wide one I can lounge on. Phew I'm exhausted just typing about it but I'm the kind of guy who takes three months to work up the energy to put a picture up.

  • I'm planning to widen my borders which is going to involve digging up grass.  I'm such a weakling that I'll have to use a hand trowel as I can't even get a spade to go into the earth  :D.  So that will be a bigger project than it needs to be!
  • Not a big project as I've done all I can with our garden without radically changing it,so we need to move really!but we are going to put a new picket fence in and a gate so our new puppy can't destroy my plants!

Nothing major - just quite a few small projects.

    - new side gate and bike container (wood). I want the container to be heavy-duty enough for me to put pots/planters/trays on top.

    - one of those wheelie bin storage thingies. Again - sturdy enough to use the top for, maybe, another strawberry patch.

    - drainage system on the back lawn. If that works, dig out a new border.

    - replace the back fence shared with a neighbour. Not sure who it belongs to. We paid for it last time though :open_mouth:

    - install guttering on the shed for a water butt.

Oh and then there is the sloping front garden! I want to level at least part of it and convert it from 'open plan' to 'no entry' (for those that use it as a dog toilet or sheep restaurant).

    Actually, I'm going to be a bit busy, aren't I ;)

No project here. I'll see what pops up😊
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Could you consider the no-dig method instead? Lay cardboard on the grass parts you want to make border, soak the cardboard, put 4" or more of compost on top and leave it for several months. To make life easy, direct sow annuals this spring (April-June) to give instant colour in the summer. By the autumn the worms will have done their work, you should be able to dig bigger holes for shrubs and perennials and it won't be back-breaking.

What kind of spade are you using? I ask because I used to have the same problem. What really helped was getting a smaller size of spade (they used to call them ladies' size), and in particular one with a smoothly polished steel blade, not the rougher sort. They slip more easily into the earth.

I suppose my big project is still figuring out what to plant! Especially the bigger things like shrubs, I get totally overwhelmed looking at all the options!
I’ve no idea what I’m doing.
