Herons are my favourite bird ... the house opposite used to have a fishpond but ten years ago they filled it in after a heron had eaten all the fish for the second time... and every spring we watch the heron come back and perch on their roof in the early morning and peer down into their garden, just in case there are fish there again this year ...

I've been watching magpies building a nest. Well I can't actually see the nest but I suppose that's the idea. It seems like a long job. They've been at it for over a week. They're awful picky about the twigs. Quite a few get rejected. Do they sleep in it while it's under construction?
@justflowers@pansyface I too have a hubby who buys birdfood by the sackload and I was astonished to find out how quickly he gets through it. I am happy about the results though, woodpeckers visit but then so do squirrels and we have a hedge by one feeding station that is absolutely abuzz with life, it's lovely. At our last house, we moved over the fence into the next street and the fat pigeon family came with us! We've now moved about 20 miles away and have a new following of fat doves and pigeons 😊
Oh I forgot this post was about berries, we've not got a holly but we've had bumper harvests on yew, honeysuckle, mistletoe, pyracantha, cotoneaster, mahonia and sarcococca. It was only thinking about this that made me realise how many berrying plants we've got. The birds are also still enjoying some leftover apples.
