I agree, @JoeX, that looks just about perfect to me and what we produce in our Dalek bins as well. I think you are perhaps expecting too much. The stuff sinks in the bin and you only get about one third of it that's good stuff right at the bottom. You scoop that out, leave the lumpy two-thirds in there and just chuck new layers on top. Job done. It helps if you have more than one bin as you can fill one bin up, leave it to 'cook' while you're filling the second one.

I think you should have another go!
I like the optimism Lizzie but it’s only like that after having it in there for two years!
Two years to produce 50l of compost good enough for mulching bushes…I’m better off getting £5.99 bags of compost when I need them and reclaiming the square meters of my garden!
Once I remove the turf mound, three daleks and potting table that’s a serious bed I could put in maybe 7 square meters all told. Or expand into with a new, larger shed.
I haven't got a massive amount out of my dalek over the years but I like having a 'bin' in the corner of the garden that all the kitchen/garden waste can disappear into. Rather that than put it into the normal bin. The quality hasn't been good because up until this year I didn't make any effort at balancing the browns and greens. It's improved since more cardboard got chucked in but I'm not that fussed. It's the recycling aspect of it that pleases me.

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
