I think cherry, crab apple or amelanchier would all work well there. Two other white-flowering trees that could work are Cornus (Cornus Kousa or Cornus Florida Cloud Nine) or Viburnum Plicatum. Think about the denseness of the canopy too, do you want full coverage or would a lighter, more see-trough tree work better? Depends where the sun is coming from and whether dense trees would block too much light to the space behind.

I think this one looks lovely - I do like this site, its great for narrowing down your options!

Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.

I love the Cornus ones, they are definitely in my top 3 or 4.

How's the weather in Spain Nollie? It's bucketing down here.

What about climbing Iceberg for the pergola rose? Very floriferous, good disease resistance. Downside is fragrance is light.

Sorry to say it’s gloriously sunny here, Fiona!  I am in the mountains not far from the Pyrenees tho, as soon as the sun goes in the temperatures plummet and we do get proper winters, often much colder than London.

I was wondering if Aimee Vibert would be a good white rose for you? I have Mme. Alfred Carriere on order, but kind of wish I had gone for this one instead as it’s a purer white and I have since seen photos of a spectacular one growing over a pergola and covered in blooms:

  • Aimee Vibart is a gorgeous rose for an archway of a pergola ❤️

I've ordered Claire Austin and Alfred Carriere but this one looks nice too. There are 6 posts in the pergola. How many roses do you think I need?

It's an interesting space viewing the photos.  You are certainly missing a feature tree.  Where does the sun rise and fall, and where is the greenhouse going?

You've felled a tree, for why?  And I can't quite work out what the other one is.  And whether those two back trees when in leaf will do a lot of your screening.

The spreading dormer windows are stripping away your privacy.  I'd be making a few rooms in that space and greening myself in, as I hate fencing.  It just needs a moat, crocodiles, and a yew garden.

If you don't mind Claire's colour, it's a nice rose. Madame Alfred Carriere is probably too big/vigorous and will need cutting back and training quite often. My choice would be probably Aimee Vibert (is it some trend on this forum to think about this rose?). It has red or dark pink buds but otherwise it is white and good for a pergola/arch.
You would need two or four, depending on the size of the rose. But I think I wouldn't grow different white roses together, anything pure white will make Claire Austin look dirty and this can be a problem with other whites too.
You could also add a clematis and grow it through the roses. It would need some additional fine support to start climbing, the post is too big and smooth for its tendrils.

The greenhouse is going behind the new bed on the left hand side. The sun hits the back of the garden in the morning and then the other side later. I cut down a dead tree (sadly) and planted three Acers at the back two years ago which are starting to screen but need a few years yet.
