Roof Moss

A neighbour has just had the moss removed from his roof.
Can it be added to the compost heap?
If so, should it be added in layers between other materials?
What nutrients will it provide?

    It's a regular query on the forum, and someone was asking earlier today. It doesn't really break down easily unfortunately.

    We chuck ours on the flower beds, assuming it makes a nice mulch, as it holds water well.  It doesn't seem to have done any harm, and we've been doing it for years.

    The mulch sounds like a useful option too.

    When you say the neighbour had moss removed from their roof, how was it removed? Were moss/algae chemical removers used ie sprayed on or just scraped off. Just a thought as they can be be harmful to plants.

    No, Floralies, it was done by scraping.

    A trowel would do the job, or a paint scraper, or a scrubbing brush, depending on what the roof is made of.  :)
