Growing lillies, stargazer and oriental

What do you do with yours in the winter and how do you plant it?
Mine grow to about 2 feet tall and are in pots because they seem to get rotted off in the ground, or maybe they just don’t like the condition.

id like to get some in the borders though so is it good to grow some individual bulbs in small pots ready to sink into the border once it puts on growth or should I just try the borders again. Should I put all the bulbs somewhere sheltered and dry now?

I don't do anything with mine. They stay in the ground and just do their thing each year.

If your soil isn't suitable, you'd need to amend that by improving it with organic matter etc to make it more free draining. That's what I've always done, and they cope perfectly well with heavy rain and everything else, if their feet are fine. They're very tough, hardy plants generally  :)

Lilies don't work well in small pots. If you can get some deep pots like they use for roses, you could do that and sink them in the ground.  I have some lilies in the ground, Lilium henryii, and the biggest problem is the slugs. I have to clear the area and put a load of crushed baked eggshells round them to keep the slugs off/allow the frogs access.  Generally I grow lilies in big tubs, bring them on to the patio when they start to flower, and then they go into the holding area for the rest of the time. I have different things in pots on the patio at different times of year.  Currently I have some colchicum waterlily and some nerines.

Yes - they need deep pots for their roots. It's why lily pots are the shape they are - tall and slim.  :)

@Zenjeff Lovely lilies. I too have some royal lilies; very fragrant. Can you please show the pot picture? I just wanted to gauge the size of the pot. Thanks.

The pot would depend on how many you have @Eustace. They also get very big over time, and multiply, so they need splitting. That happens more quickly in the ground.  :)
I would usually have about three bulbs in a 12 inch pot or thereabouts. 4 or 5 would need something bigger. Just roomy enough to get them planted at a good depth, without being crowded.  :)

18 inches deep by 14inches square top

  • Thanks for sharing all, I do have them in the tall thin pots that roses came in. I’m thinking of hedging my bet and grouping some in pots within pots so easier to water and maybe more of a display. Also when done flowering can be moved away.  I’ll also try some directly in the borders, be brave.
