That's what they do. The leaves grow in Autumn, but the flowers don't appear until spring. The tulips - if they've survived - won't grow leaves or flowers until spring though.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
It is all to do with when the rain fell in the place where they evolved. Autumn rains after Summer drought, stimulates the bulbs to begin growing. Winter cold has no effect on them and they continue to photosynthesise over the cold months. They flower in Spring and die away as the Spring rains disappear.
that makes sense - I laid some grass about four weeks ago - watered it everyday but I know that area caught a lot of it from the sprinkler - plus all the rain we have had in the last two or three weeks!
