what plants are you planning to buy / try next year?

I can't be the only one dreaming of next spring? :) I am hoping to pick up/order:

- a scented pelargonium (cinnamon? apple? there is a bewildering array)

- verbena bonariensis (swayed by some of your photos here and also GW)

- a peony (if I can get the trellis up and make a sheltered spot for one. THEN there's choosing a variety from the 2838382million available...)

  • Saw the perennial sunflower variety lemon queen on gardener's world a few weeks back and think I will definitely be trying to get some for my own garden for next year.

The Jerusalem artichoke plants I grow as a vegetable have a very short lived small flower when I grow them here, so I'm interested to compare the related plants. I also bought a Yacon plant in a pot that I will plant out next year that is another sunflower relative and I'm interested to compare the flowers and other characteristics of all of them. I'm also curious if they would be able to cross breed but just going to try growing them for a bit first.
Got a peony myself that grew from mixed seeds I picked up at a mature garden I was walking around. No flowers in four of five years growth now but it still looks interesting. Might imply you'd be better getting yours from a more reliable source than the one I planted as they do seem to be very variable.
Verbena bonariensis are very good plants to have and I got a few self seeded in the garden for the first time this year which is nice. They might be best in a more sheltered spot as the one I have in a fairly exposed site was blown over a few times.

Ooh, that sunflower is a real beauty!

Thanks for the tips on  verbena and peonies!
  • I am determined to get some snow drops in the green early next year - I was slow off the mark this year and missed out. I also want a couple of white hardy geranium varieties - by the time I had worked out which ones I wanted, they were sold out! Clearly, the lesson learnt is not to be so dithery! I am also pondering a clematis but I am overwhelmed by the choice.

In fairness to you, this year was pretty rubbish for getting or doing anything much. May 2021 be not quite as rubbish. I have bought six or seven clems this year because, like you, I was unable to choose.:)

More dahlias for the back of my rainbow border.  I'd like to make more of a container display than I've done before, but haven't decided what to put in them yet.

Anthriscus ravenswing, Dill, I'm going to attempt Dahlias again. Hopefully the slugs won't get them all next year! And a banana plant😃

I'm determined to grow cosmos Tetra Versailles Red and Petunia Tidal Wave, as I missed both this year and miss them dearly. I might go for a basket of begonia Million Kisses at the front; and some for the side returm as they, essentially, can grow in the dark. Three more rose Etoile; snap dragon Black Prince. I'm getting a thing for certain, dark diascias. Possibly a creeping rosemary, which I didn't know was a thing until someone posted it on the forum. I'm going to be planting out a jungle of white thalictrum and eupatorium, though I don't know if my ground is damp enough. Lobeilas turn out to be quite an important part of existence.

Generally - I want a lot more height from here on out. Towering flowers.

Never can have enough dahlias. I have my dahlia seeds and heated propagator mat ready for the end of winter.

Sounds quite a vision, @Fire. Thalictra are so ethereal.

My kitchen window sill is already full of trays of seedlings for perennials next year.  I've also done lots of cuttings of Salvias of different types.  Black and bloom,  purple rain and an unknown red one and unknown lilac one.  I'm also going to add colour by growing annuals from seed and planting them out through my boarder.   Queen red lime Zinnia and lemonade cosmos for starters.  I've also ordered 3 types of iris, 40 in total and 100 pink crocus with egg took yellow centres.  That should cheer the garden up!
Glad I'm not the only one already looking forward to spring! 😀

Nice subject as I'm sure we're all looking forward to spring....have just started doing seeds and so far I've just sown some sweet peas which I'm waiting with anticipation to see germinate.
I've also got Verbena on the go (bought as small plants from Morrisons and they're outside in small pots and I'm particularly looking forward to these for the colour and the fact bees like them.
Will be ordering a bare root rose (or 2!).
Last but not least I've just planted a clematis for the first time - Viticella Lady Q.
