    The warming drawer experiment.

    Two layers of apple and fig slices at a temperature which is the same as gives me plates that can just be picked up with fingertips.

    Will leave it to run for 8 then 20 hours to see how it gets along.

    Hmmm. Warming drawer is on a normal socket, so if I empty all the stuff out of one shelf I can use the energy-measurer to find out how much it uses. I have a very small digital measurer, but it is so small I have lost it.

  • To be honest we think it is a lot of effort for little reward, and all so a waste of electric,we don't think we will bother after reading all the comments about how long it takes.

    Apple sauce, and Americans like to put crisp apples in their salads. Worth a try?

    The Bramley ones are certainly quite tart. To me, anyway, and I hardly ever put sugar on any fruit unless it is unsweetened stewed rhubarb.

    I am thinking fondu or glaze them before drying with something sweet.

    IMO (after wine) going off topic is a moral duty, otherwise something relevant might get missed.

    There must have been something in the water in Battle Creek, Michigan.

    Not only was that the home of the Sanatorium Mr Kellogg of Cornflake fame, who tried to invent a nutricious breakfast for his inmates, it  was also where the Grapenuts Cereal was invented by Mr C W Post. Now mainly in Morrisons I think over here. Feels pricey but keeps its crunch with milk unlike Weetabix which turns into post-dunking Rich Teas in seconds. I used to enjoy the spiel that was on the old-style packet for Grapenuts about how Mr Post roasted Grapenuts in his gas oven and ground them up in his home Coffee Grinder.

    It seems to be a place where history happened. I wonder where is similar in the UK?

    More tomorrow on the saga of the apple (and fig and pear and banana) chips of Nottinghamshire. I'm quite optimistic, and it's hard to avoid tasting them for supper.

    "Grapenuts feel pricey".

    Now there is a hypothesis I feel the need to test. I haven't eaten them in 20 years. All I remember is little nuggets like hard rabbit poo or hand rolled Bran Flake balls. They don't seem to be a big UK thing. Maybe you should slow-roast some grapes and see what happens.
  • At least the comments are making us laugh, and can't wait for the next batch of ideas of what to do with eating apples.
