Thanks for all the suggestions. I thought bulbs might be too much work for this lady (and don’t know she might have zillions). Also didn’t want vouchers. I went for a really nice pair of briers gloves; they feel like soft leather, but they are a material that doesn’t go hard when they get wet.
Also......a hydrangea! I wouldn’t have got this if it didn’t look perfect but it is a really lovely one. It’s a lacecap with deep pink flowers, and a really nice big one, looks very healthy. B & Q surprise me sometimes!
She can keep this in a pot, or I’ll offer to dig the hole for her if she wants to plant it out.
I love buying presents and try to put a lot of thought into the gift and its wrapping.
My wife is incredibly organised about such matters and keeps a record of Christmas and birthday presents given in the past (and cards sent) as well as presents bought in advance. We have already bought almost all of the presents for this Christmas, some for Christmas 2021 and many birthday presents for the 12 months ahead.
It is a system that works for us. The presents are stored in a big plastic container on the top shelf of the wardrobe, the cost is spread through the year, big discounts can be had by buying in the sales, gifts are tailored exactly to recipients’ tastes and there is no last minute scramble which ends up with a that’ll-do scented candle from B &M with some horrible dust gathering pot pourri to go with it.
Christmas 2021 😮 ! Wow, that is very organised, thought l was doing well for this year. To be fair, much of it is stuff like hampers etc for online delivery, particularly in view of "the current situation" .
So would you buy this hydrangea lover...another hydrangea? Or could you suggest something else please,
The last thing I would want is a random plant I feel duty bound to plant and maintain - I would ask them what theyd like, or at worst offer to get one of two plants and ask which theyd prefer.
If you have children to buy for, it's really not possible to buy that far ahead, @BenCotto - children change so rapidly in their interests. Which is not to say I don't admire your organisation...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
I would like to receive something practical but beautiful and high-end (not like the cheap garbage I buy for myself). For example, a high quality pocket knife for taking cuttings. I don't like getting plants.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
In the meantime, this thread has given me a few present ideas as well.
