Rose Claire Austin question

Hello all,

I can see this comes as a rose standard and as a climber, but does it also come as a normal shrub rose?
I’m not too fond of standards and I don’t need a climber in the spot I’m looking to fill, but the pale yellow of C. Austin is just what I’m after.
thanks.

I don't think it has a shrub form. Looking now at my Claire Austin climber the open flowers are not at all yellow, the buds are but they open to cream/white. If you want a more yellow from David Austin Roses, Vanessa Bell, Comte de Champagne and A Country Parson claim to be pale yellow. Don't be tempted by Charles Darwin, I have it and that is sometimes yellow but is affected a lot by weather/temperatureBut can be this

My Claire Austin is also a creamy white on the outside, it's usually only the centre that is a pale lemon yellow. Mine's a climber and is very lax with long pliable canes that flop everywhere. I would imagine the bush version might be similar.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I know it’s creamy white, but with a pale yellow Centre (my neighbour has one and it’s glorious.)
I also like how the petals stay on for a long time. That’s useful, as I plan to have it near the front door.
I was after the palest yellow possible really, with strong scent, medium sized blooms, repeat flowering and good disease resistance.
Not asking for much, am I 🙄😊

Looking at @Marlorena's picture of a young The Country Parson just now on the rose 2020 thread I thought of you. Seems to meet all your requirements, the yellow on hers seems paler than DA's pictures
  • Thanks Tack, I’ll have a look on the DA website.
  • It’s stunning, but at 1m max height, a bit on the short side 😐

Shame, what size have you in mind?

DA will send you a catalogue, free of charge. I find the fold out pages with just pictures very handy when trying to compare colours.
  • Thanks all. Was thinking about 1.50m in height or taller really, for a shrub rose.

Then, Claire Austin is probably a good rose for you. When you said shrub, I imagine something like 90x90cm or slightly more, this is what many people with small gardens want these days from shrubs. You shouldn't have problems to keep Claire around 1.5m with pruning.
