This seems to be a common thing, I think it's more to do with lack of effort than weight. Mine has been left unemptied before, upon enquiring I was told it was so heavy it would "break the lifting system". I pointed out that couldn't possibly be true for numerous reasons, but as usual the council do not care.
Unfortunately councils and the like have mostly forgotten that they exist and are paid to serve residents and not their own interests. Something like 20% of all council tax is used to pay for council pensions, over 2000 council employees get paid over £100,000, and the highest paid council employee in the UK earns over £500,000 a year.
A disgrace of unelected officials, that no doubt we could debate for a long time.
Is it easier to drag 39kg along to ground to the collection point than is it to lift it up into the bin lorry? If I was an engineer with the correct calculations I would complaint to the council BASTARDS.
That's better than what I found on my garden waste bin a few weeks ago. There was a label saying it hadn't been emptied because it was too heavy. Of course it was heavy, they hadn't emptied the damn thing for 6 weeks and was full of grass clippings.
I ended up transferring part of the content to bags and putting it in the non-recyclable bin.
How do they know it's too heavy?..but more to the point how are you supposed to know? And what weight should it be?...not that you can weigh it. And I guess it wasn't too heavy for you to wheel outside your house. Bloody councils...
All perfectly valid questions SydRoy, and Yes I did wheel it all the way from the back garden to outside the front gate for it to be emptied.
I was initially worried about this - the Council rules don't say anything about weight and I often fill my bins up with grass clippings, which are very heavy. Leaving the lids open will evaporate a lot of water and lighten the load. However, our bin men will quite happily empty a bin full of grass. They're also helpful with other things so no complaints. (I believe the machinery that lifts the bins to empty them has a weight sensor - primarily that because some people fill them with rocks and concrete !)
