Monty was sowing parsley last week for April onward harvest, but said it need to be sown asap. I think Lambs Lettuce is growable over winter but I've not tried
Thank you Pete. Herbs are mum’s department but lambs lettuce could be a good call. They’re not too trendy for dad! Will have a look for seeds 👍
There are onion sets that can be planted soon to over winter and provide a harvest late spring/early summer to fill the gap before the spring planted ones are ready for harvest.
You could also maybe get him some purple sprouting broccoli plugs which will be ready for harvesting from late winter to spring depending on how cold you are. They do go green when cooked so shouldn't spook him and they're old, not modern and very British.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

@SydRoy@Obelixx@Lyn. Thank you for your suggestions... all of them excellent. I’ve got dad turnip seeds, onions are his favourite veg to grow so I’ll get him some sets and he loves spring greens and purple sprouting (my favourite) so I’ll see if I can find him some plugs. Too late for seeds @Obelixx? We’re in Hertfordshire so pretty mild here.
Thank you all so much .... brilliant suggestions from everyone! 👏👏👏
Has to be worth a try and a packet of seeds is cheap enough and will last a couple of seasons if stored well as you won't want a whole packet's worth of seedlings.

I’ll get some seeds today @Obelixx. Like you say, got to be worth a try 🤞
Have you thought of buying him a potato barrel and planting some potatoes ready for Christmas. My local GC has the seed potatoes in now, a choice of about 5 varieties. I tried potato sacks a couple of years ago, a waste of money as they rotted in the sun very quickly and tore very easily. I bought a couple of plasticized cardboard barrels years ago which are still going strong. They fold down flat for storage when not being used. Around £20.00 each. The potatoes do not crop as heavily as normal but enough for a taste of new spuds with Christmas dinner. Can't get much better than that,

@Joyce Goldenlily I couldn’t agree with you more! Brilliant idea for the potato barrels. Is there a particular variety of potato you could recommend?
I have bought Maris Piper for this year. Never tried it before. I always grow International Kidney which is the same as Jersey Royal, and King Edward, I am going to try bringing home some seaweed to grow the Jersey Royals in next year. They just do not taste the same as the ones you buy on the islands. There is going to be plenty of seaweed washed up after the current storms.
