Must have plants

Just wondering - if you could pick any three ‘must have’ plants for a British garden what would they be?

    Personally, hollyhocks, verbena boneriensis and roses.

    thanks, I’ve never tried growing hollyhocks are they quite straightforward?

    My choice would be tomatoes, onions and potatoes.  Goes without saying I'd need the herbs to go with each of those  :)

    Yes. About the easiest of all plants. Once you have them in your garden they give you lots of freebies every year. Sometimes a few too many!

    This is tough.

    That few requires them all to earn their keep with a long flowering season. Based on that I immediately thought of dahlias and fuchsias as the first two. Flowers from June into October. 

    Reckon I'd probably go with scabious as the third but that might depend on my mood.

    Clematis, fatsia japonica and spring bulbs

    Persicaria amplexicaulis would be in there ('Rosea' if I had to pick). Sedum (probably 'Matrona'). Probably also a rose, Marlorena would have to advise me on the longest lasting type, but 'Rosarie de l'Hay' is nice.

    Tulips, dahlias and agapanthus.

    Helenium 'Sahin's Early Flowerer' because it flowers from June to the first frosts if I deadhead it frequently. Euphorbia palustris - fabulous shot of lime in the Spring border, looks good all summer and then displays fine autumn tints. Viburnum plicatum 'Mariesii' - breathtaking when in flower and super autumn foliage.
