First scrape the bark with your fingernail to see if the plant is dead already. If there's green underneath, there's some life.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • Was it fried by the really hot weather we've had? Doesn't look particularly promising.

Do you think it is over watered?
  • It looks utterly sun scorched

How much water have you been giving it?  Mine is in a gritty free-draining loam-based compost and has roughly a gallon of water every other day in the summer ... more often during the recent hot spell.

Tell us more about your tree. How long have you had it? What is it planted in? Is it in a sunny or shady spot?

Ive just been given it and it’s about 10-15 years old. It is potted in a terracotta tub in mixed soil. It’s on a patio in direct sunlight

Perhaps it was in a shadier spot in its former home?
If so the leaves might not have toughened up enough to cope with the very strong sun we had recently.
