More beautiful than a single?

Is there any double flower that is more beautiful than the single?
I'm still flicking through the pile of old gardening magazines and the numerous adverts for amazing double this and double that leave me cold.

I'd say some Dahlias and Aquilegias can be more beautiful, but it really depends on your perception of beautiful  ;)
I had a tiny alpine  campanula in a previous garden which was stunning. It may have been Elizabeth Oliver. Lovely little thing.  :)

I agree about some  dahlias but not aquilegia.. They remind me of can can ladies bending over to display their frilly knickers. I prefer the granny's bonnet.

I like semi-double roses. Not the "packed-in, almost triple" type, but the loose sort.

Yes some roses can go on the list.

I have a lovely lilac double primula.
    Really don't like double clematis

Doubles are usually no use for wildlife so they tend to irritate me. Some of the double snowdrops are pretty.

I really don't like those clems either @K67 - the ones that look like passion flowers - floridas.  Horrible.
I love the macropetalas though.  :)

I'd much rather have a 'frilly can can' Aquilegia in a good colour, than some of those insipid pasty singles  ;)

A pure white single aquilegia has to beat one that looks like those things you rub shower gel on with.

I'd agree with that @B3, but I've also never tried putting shower gel on with an aquilegia.... :D
I actually don't have any of the frilly knicker ones and never have...

I did have a lovely dwarf white one which vanished, although I hope the piece I gave to a late member of the forum is still thriving in her garden  :)
