Sound Cancelling Plants?

No - there's no plants which will sort that.
I'd agree that it might be worth trying the council. The only difficulty can be repercussions, so it's worth treading carefully. I've often felt like reporting the relentless yapping dogs we have in huge numbers round here, as there's one a couple of doors away from me. I resorted to shouting 'shut that effing dog up'. It's a lot better now, but there was umpteen occasions when I couldn't be in the garden because of it. Hour after hour of barking, even when the owners were in the house.

I wish you luck with it.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

If it helps, my council allows complaints to be submitted anonymously so yours may too

I'm lucky in that there are at least ten other residences (Tyneside flats) around us so it could have been anyone of us who complained.

Best you can do as there aren't any sound cancelling plants is to get some sound cancelling headphones.
It's sad that so many of us, me included, feel unable to speak to our neighbours about noise problems.

As others have said, there is no planting which will have any effect on the noise level in the situation described.  Even a 6 foot fence (if permitted at the front of the property) wouldn't make any difference.
  • I have been wearing noise cancelling headphones. It is so frustrating to have to live in my own home with headphones on but even more frustrating when it's hot and I can't open my windows due to their noise. I tried to discuss the noise with the neighbour so if I complain to the council they will know it's me and I do worry what they will do next. There's already been issues with them blocking my drive. It's a couple with adult children still living at home. The son seems to be the worst for the noise and blocked drive (and the attitude).
Their house is a sort of 'U' shape with the opening facing my house right at the fence. They have paved the 'inside' of the 'U' and treat it as a patio. So when they turn the radio up or sing loudly or have parties or anything really the noise seems to bounce off all the hard surfaces and go straight to my house if that makes any sense? It may not be affecting anyone else because the neighbour isn't in their garden but rather in this sort of alcove by my fence.
I don't know why it never ceases to amaze me how inconsiderate some people can be.

Funnily enough I bought some of those at the weekend (the earphone version rather than headphone). They're VERY good.

    Sony wf-1000xm3

These are for the warm afternoons at my desk when the neighbours play their audiobooks at almost full volume in the garden (who does that?!!!!)  Thankfully the drunken shouting and music 'til 4 am has stopped! I found that an air purifier at the end of the bed helped in that situation (like white noise).
  • Thanks jamessayersbrown. I'll have a look for that model as I hate wearing headphones in my house. Maybe earbud type ones would be better. The air purifier sounds a good idea does it heat or cool your room at all?
Glad to hear your 4am noise has stopped!
  • Isn't it funny that some us thought this crisis with bring out the good in people and to make them feel they belong to a wider social unit than just their household...nope it looks we're back to the usual selfish insular nonsense.

@HelloFellowGardeners the purifier doesn't heat or cool (it's only designed to filter dust and other pollutants from the air) but it makes a lovely noise that cancels out others beyond it.

Any normal fan would work I guess. I got mine originally for pollen so that I didn't wake up all blocked up with a headache. Worked a treat.

@amancalledgeorge I fear that this whole situation in 2020 has made a lot more people more selfish and insular. I guess it stems from wanting to protect your own household and seeing outsiders as a disease-carrying threat. Plus we've had more people at home during the day for a long period of time; boredom; frustration etc.

I'm sure there are lots of cases of neighbours pulling together but not here.
  • Shame @jamessayersbrown it took the lockdown to get to know a bit some of my neighbours as they started taking interest in their garden which has been great. It was a great opportunity to recalibrate and find a new everyday that is more fulfilling...not just rush to the pubs and shops after the restrictions were lifted. But that's human nature for you. Good luck with your situation, can't be easy to feel besieged in your house.
