Climbing aster

Hi, I have inherited a climbing aster in our new garden and I think it needs to be moved as it has no support where it currently is, but I’ve no idea when is best to do so?

Some varieties of Aster do grow quite tall, but they are not climbers.  Have you seen the flowers yet or are you waiting for them still? An idea of variety might help with advice.
Asters/Symphoritrichum are best grown among other plants for some shelter from wind, if they are tall, and given support with canes and twine or twiggy sticks as they grow higher. Mine have usually been fairly robust if grown 'hard'.
They can be safely moved in autumn, after flowering, or in spring.

Ampelaster carolinianus is also known as climbing aster but not a plant we seem to have in the UK as an aster to us is as Buttercup says
  • Hi both, sorry I didn’t see your replies till now.
Here’s a photo of it in June - it only flowered for a few weeks. My mother in law, whose house this used to be, doesn’t know what it is. We’re on the west coast of Ireland. I used Picture This for the id. It’s quite straggly hence why I thought I might move it, plus it’s lovely and it’s current location doesn’t seem to show it off or support it too well, although it is in the middle of a bed so lots of other plants. Many thanks.
  • The leaves look like Clematis, is it part of the same plant?
    Wearside, England.
  • Yes all the same, I originally thought clematis but someone told me it wasn’t! Presumably best growing up something then? Thanks

    It's a clematis, although I don't know which one.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I'm sure  he will - but I don't think he's been on much recently.
Hopefully he'll see your tag @K67 and pop in  ;)

If not try his website Hawthornes Nursery as he has many photos you can look through, although I can't remember ever seeing a clematis flower like yours
  • Thanks, maybe it is a climbing aster then??!
