I thought it might have been a native hellebore corsicus or foetidus?

Leaves of Helleborus are very different.

Helleborus argutifolius /syn Helleborus corsicus......common name holly leaf Helleborus.....not a UK Native..comes from Sardinia and Corsica.
Leaves are evergreen, composed of three spiny-toothed dark green leaflets.
So leaves would still be green and fresh even now.

    Pic below Helleborus argutifolius.

My guess would be Digitalis lutea.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Since the plant is on a very narrow bit of border between a steep wall and a Pyracantha hedge where there is only room for one of my feet I shall have to wait until next year when it flowers to take another photo.
I thought D. mertonensis had pink flowers?
Thanks for the efforts folks, very grateful.

Okay, I'm definitely wrong about the helleborus!
