Why feed tomatoes?

  • I see.. gosh they sound like they wilt very quickly..! How big are your pots..? Mine would wilt if it’s been hot for two days in a row usually..that’s for the ones that I grow in the smaller pot (basically recycled David Austin Rose pots)

The smaller ones are 27cms in diameter( I don't know how many litres that is) but they are in full sun most of the day. The ones that get a bit less sun, I can usually get away with once a day.

A couple of weeks ago, mine didn't get watered for several days @celcius_kkw , and they're in a growhouse - because it simply wasn't hot enough for them to dry out. It's currently 15 degrees here, and not much warmer in there.  :)
The important thing is to be consistent with watering. I wait until mine are slightly wilted , then I water - thoroughly. That could be daily in a hot spell, or, as above if it's not. Wind will dry them quickly too when in pots and outside.

I have two plants in a rectangular container. I can fit two of those in the growhouse side by side. They're about 15 inches wide by about a foot in depth and a bit less in height.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Wow, everyone seems to have their toms in massive pots! Apart from the ones I have in grow bags with halos, all my toms are in pots less than 12" wide. They still get enormous.

I also have on in the house @strelitzia32 , in a clematis pot. It was grown from one of the sideshoots. It'll be fine in that - already has some fruit on it.  :)
Those boxes I have are probably the volume equivalent of a couple of ten to twelve inch pots, but they fit in the little growhouse better than round ones.
I often use those florist's pots for toms, but I can't easily get four pots in there, so I got the boxes instead  :)

  • @Fairygirl that makes sense, if you have the space then why not! I do keep meaning to switch to square pots for ease of fitting together, but usually end up sticking round pots in gravel trays...

I think there should be a "smallest tomato" challenge next year. Winner is the person with the smallest plant, in the smallest pot, as measured when there is one fully ripe fruit.

I have got mine in pots 7in wide x 10in deep.. and some are in 17x15 in pots (two in one pot) - they all seem to be growing well, I have lots of toms growing but none have ripened yet.. they’re all grown on my balcony..

I also have a couple of tumbling bella plants (Determinate variety) and those are absolutely ginormous with literally hundreds of flowers..

I’ve now pinched off the tips of all my cordon varieties - they all have four to five trusses of flowers/fruits.. as I’m worried that they may not ripen in time.. given they’re all still green.

A couple of years ago the supermarkets has punnets of tiny tomatoes, the size of beads. I don't know what they were called, but I suspect, that one would be the winner😊
Just had a look on Google. It seems they're called tomberries

They're all changing colour though @celcius_kkw, so they're ripening  :)

Those tumbling ones look good value  :)

  • Tomberries sound very cute!

The toms on my tumbling bella are actually almost the same size as my generous gardener/sungold!

The germination rate of tumbling bella was really poor though, as I only got two seedlings out of 10 sowed.. but the two that did germinate are the most vigorous of all my tomato plants!

I initially considered putting two of them in one planter but thanks to the advice of members here I decided to just have one in each planter.. what a right a decision that was because they have grown so huge to the point I’m struggling to get my watering can’s nozzle in to water the base now!
