I think Monty's charm is a very old fashioned Englishness that dates him into an Edwardian novel. Some will find his genteel detachment and demeanour that of a nice neighbour you have to talk to while watering your plants but find too boring to invite for coffee. Others will recognise in him their best friend that gives them plant advice. It's all about life experiences and the people that surround us in real life. I can't relate to him very much but can still enjoy seeing him pot things and ramble on about seeds every week. It's harmless fun and frankly it treats its audience without contempt, not something that can be said by lots of recent TV.
We sometimes play a ‘Who would we like as our neighbours’ game. I must say I have not considered Monty and he might have to wait for one of the existing lot to move out - that’s Judge Judy, Robert Peston, the Obamas and Richard Osman.

Hmmm. Judge Judy?! The rest, I understand. But judge Judy? Did you mistype David Attenborough?
I'd love to have the whole Don family over for dinner.
I put the show in the same 70s gentle TV world with Take Hart, Bagpuss, Spring Watch and Sewing Bee. It hopes to share and teach things. It's not particularly edgy or greatly innovative but is friendly, reassuring and wishing to help. It's a world I belong to.
People you enjoy watching on television are not necessarily the coves you would like living next door. Better they are someone else's neighbours. To have good neighbours, you need to be a good neighbour. It's all about compromise. Some of the suggestions didn't get where they are by compromising
