  • And there's this nice bit of instruction how to plant them on the David Austin website, planted six bare root roses last year and it was a breeze.

Hi Susan. If you are going to buy bare root roses order them as soon as possible as they soon get snapped up if they are a popular variety. They will be delivered in the autumn.

I wouldn't order them now... you should be advised that both Beales and Austins regularly offer discounts on bare roots in December, 15 or 20 percent off...  it's only the very rarest roses they offer that disappear quick, because they don't propagate many of those..  it's worth taking a chance and waiting, and there will always be alternatives to choose from in any case..
..up to you of course... I even wait until next March because Beales offer as much as 35 percent off towards the end of the season...  at least in a normal year.. what's normal nowadays?..

Thank you for that information Marlorena I will wait a bit longer then as that sounds a big discount.

I am going with the suggestions you made so have a choice between 5 so will surely be able to get at least one of them in stock, if not I will come back on here to ask for alternatives.

Massive thanks to you and everyone on here for all the helpful advice I have received

I only buy DA roses as otherwise there seems so much choice.I am lucky enough to be able to visit his gardens easily when they are open and I can definitely recommend Gertrude she is a favourite of mine the scent is amazing!

You are lucky to be able to visit the actual gardens

I have looked at the rose sites and David Austen has only 3 of my chosen 5 roses but Trevor White and Peter Beale have 4 so am sure I will be able to get the roses of my choice from at least one of them

One thing I did notice was the difference in prices.....bare root is only £12.95 from Trevor white, £17.50 from Peter Beale and £18.50 from David Austen

Is there really a difference in the quality of the more expensive ones?

...Susan.. I've been buying roses for close on 40 years ..  anybody who knows anything about buying roses,  that is those who do so frequently, not just one here and there,..  will tell you that Trevor White roses produce the very best quality bare roots there is, the roots are huge, and there are a decent number of canes, at least 3 ...  first class, grade A roses... I've never had a bad one from them..  I stress I have absolutely no connection with this company...

The others are good usually, depends on the variety chosen,  but not always to the same mark as White's...

The other nursery I would put up there that sells great quality bare root roses is Style Roses of Lincolnshire...   well worth looking on their website too.. delivery is superbly quick, within a day or two..

I should also add there are suppliers overseas in Europe that offer roses incredibly cheaply, but maybe you shouldn't delve into that just at the moment...
