Selling plants from my home/garden

Hi there everyone
Just had a quick question does anyone sell plants from their home/garden face to face I have been back and forth with this idea and wanted to know more, like do I need to register somewhere or other stuff
I have contacted APHA as well just really want to know people experiences as I just want to do it for fun

Kind regards 😊

Be careful with which plants you are selling. I'm sure the ones with the PBR are not allowed.

And make sure your insurance covers you for business use if customers will becoming onto your property. Just in case someone has a fall or something. Blame culture is a thing these days.

You will run into many problems, selling plants directly from your house. Consider selling them on Etsy or Ebay as an easier option.
Also, be very careful about patents - which plants can be propagated and which can't without a license.

Also work out the costs and expenses before you jump into it.  There is a reason none of us have given up our day jobs. 😉

I've recently raised about £25 for our local hospice by putting surplus plants on my drive nearest the pavement, with a sign asking people to drop a few coins through my letterbox.  I posted it on the local Freecycle and Next Door websites with my address.

    Yeah was considering advertising online
  • Just go for it! It's fun and rewarding - I have been doing this for a few weeks and it's always a pleasure when people stop to look and/or buy. I have only made £35 but I am not doing it to make money, more for pleasure ... and, I hope, the pleasure of others when they buy something at a fraction of the cost from a garden centre.

Don't put anything down on paper or online, not a conspiracy theorist, but "they" are watching out there.

According to one nurseryman speaker at a garden club meeting the worst crooks are the Dutch, won't pay for your PBRs, they just change the name of a plant and say they bred it, but support from their government they hound anyone who does not pay theirs!

Just want to point out that there is a difference between selling for charity and for personal gain.  Every year I buy plants from our local high school agricultural class.. I'm happy to pay more knowing it's going to a worthwhile organization.  Where as I get pretty tight fisted when it comes to other for-profit plant buying.

Every year I just give my surplus stock away, advertising it on the village Facebook page. There are lots of similar acts helping to bind our community. Anyway, quite frequently the stuff is PBR protected so giving it away is the only option. Additionally I get to talk to some folk I don’t often meet, including a delightful Mongolian trapeze artist from the overwintering circus.
