Help - Newbie - my fuchsia

Hi everyone. I'm a complete newbie to Gardening. I planted this fuchsia a couple of years ago, it's now going crazy and out growing its space, smothering the rosemary and the shrub on it's right (not even sure what that srub is!).

When (and how) should I prune it back?

Many thanks in advance! 😊

  • Thanks Treeface, really appreciate it.  :)
Just need some pruning advice now, I've looked at so many YouTube videos, however they all seem to tell me something different, like time of year, how much to cut back, depends on what type of fuchsia.

I would it to grow more up than out, If that's possible?

Cut the fuchsia almost to the ground at the end of February.

I agree with @Lyn ... she’s good at fuchsias ... but if you want a more upright plant you may have to replace it with another variety ... some grow upwards, some grow outwards.

  • @Lyn thank you for the advice! I'll prune it right back  :)

@Dovefromabove, thanks, make sense. Think I'll just stick with this one then. See how it look after I've cut it back.

Thanks both, super appreciate your advice.

Would you do this regardless of where you are in the country?

Yes, that’s when I cut it down, you may see tiny new shoots at the base, it’s quite cold here in the winter, usually😀. But that’s about the right time. Obviously if we’re in a freeze up leave it a bit later.  That type of fuchsia is a job to kill off.
There are some rusty leaves on it, the yellow ones, I would remove those.

  • Unless the lonicera is regularly trimmed then it will grow big.

To be honest.  Please or offend.  So many of us buy/obtain plants, perhaps becxause we like the look of them.   Then as the season proceeds......wowie, this plant is getting out of hand.  Sorry and no offence intended but.  A little research before buying or planting can save so so much.

Steven if you want an upright fuchsia, try to get a Lady Boothby.
They call it a climber, it isn't really, , it need a trellis to tie it too, but it’s upright and I think, just what you need there. Cut the loses and take out the Bush one you have there.

  • How do get a fuchsia to grow big if you always cut it to the ground in Feb? Honestly curious. I want my purple and white one to be a big shrub not summer bedding size.
